The embroidered banner of Saint-Maurin was inaugurated on Friday, April 19th 2024 in the great hall of the abbey castle of Saint-Maurin in the presence of around twenty embroiderers accompanied by their partners, a few friends, Gérard Deflisque, president of the association Les Amis de l’Abbaye de Saint-Maurin and Jean-Claude Malcayran, mayor of Saint-Maurin.
After a welcome word from Gérard, the Chairman, Martine Goudezeune, who was in charge of the embroidered banner project, thanked the embroiderers for their work and gave an overview of this long and exciting adventure: it took almost 2,000 hours to embroider the 40 cross-stitch designs, involving some 240,000 stitches! Martine also thanked the association and the mayor of Saint-Maurin, which had co-financed the project.
And the banner was unveiled in front of the embroiderers, eager to see the result of their collective work.
It was a proud and emotional moment for the embroiderers! Our banner is magnificent!
The meeting was followed by a generous aperitif and lunch.
At the end of this wonderful meeting, each embroiderer left with an explanatory booklet about the banner, a much-appreciated little gift.
The banner will now remain on display in the hall of the abbey castle, with an explanatory booklet available for consultation at reception. It will be on display when the museum is open.
If you’re interested, the booklet is also available from the association, so contact us!
